11 Unexpected (and a few expected) Things to Watch on Netflix

Pj's in the bed - Crazy Blonde Life

It’s normally so easy to get caught up in the go-go-go mentality and inevitable wanderlust that we often feel during the summer season, but this year might look a little different for most of us! We may find ourselves staying in and wondering what to do with our evenings and that’s where Netflix comes in. I’ve picked a few series…some old and some new…that you might not have seen before. So if you find yourself with no plans for the evening, grab your favorite puppy and binge watch one of my top picks for summer!

Becoming- I think everyone in this country needs a little bit of hope right now, which is exactly what I got from watching the new Michelle Obama documentary.  Everything she does will always be interesting to me…I mean who doesn’t love her?! This documentary gives the viewer a closer look at the life of the countries first black First Lady…all the challenges and successes.  So inspiring!

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner- I miss traveling so much!  This show helps me get my fix of travel, food and culture!  Chef David Chang (of the famous Momofuku) meets up with some of his hilarious celebrity friends and they eat their way through breakfast, lunch and dinner in some of the best cities around the world.  This show makes me so hungry and so excited to be able to go out to dinner again!

Bloodline- If you’re looking for more of a suspenseful thriller, look no further.  Set in the beautiful Florida Keys, Bloodline follows the lives of the Raeburn’s, a hardworking American family with lots of secrets.  The storytelling goes from past to present and leaves you constantly guessing.  It will also make you really excited to go on a tropical vacation once quarantine is over!

Kim’s Convenience- Definitely a feel good, easy to watch sitcom.  Kim’s Convenience is about a Korean-Canadian family, the Kim’s, who run a convenience store in Toronto. This show reminds us to learn to appreciate each other’s “weirdness” as we watch the Kim’s adapt to the local Canadian culture.

Call the Midwife-I scrolled past this show so many times while browsing Netflix…for years!  But as soon as I watched the first episode of this period drama set in poverty-stricken East London, I was addicted!  You will not be able to stop watching.  Each episode follows the midwives (mainly Jenny Lee) as they help a new family with whatever challenges they are facing.  The show is about friendship and motherhood in 1950’s London.

Atypical- Atypical is another coming of age show, but this one focuses on the life of 18 year old Sam Gardner, who is on the autistic  The creators do a great job of helping viewers learn more about what it’s like for those on the autism spectrum and their families.  Although there are a few clichés, Atypical is warm, funny and worth a watch!

Shine On with Reese- Another one of my favorites…Reese Witherspoon! Shine On is not your typical talk show.  It follows Reese on her visits with some of the most inspirational women of our time and they talk about their journeys.  It is female empowerment at its best!  My favorite episode is with Glennon Doyle!

7 Days Out- If you’ve ever wondered what goes into preparing for some of the biggest events in the world, this show will be your cup of tea!  7 Days Out covers the people who prepare for the Kentucky Derby, Westminster Dog Show, and Chanel fashion show just to name a few.  This show gets very intense and will give you a new appreciation for all the people behind the scenes!

Hollywood- Set in post World War II Hollywood, California this show is all about glamour and the lengths to which young actors will go to find success!  I found myself getting lost in the glamour of Tinseltown.  The show also gives us a glimpse into the unfair biases that continue even today for aspiring actors.

Never Have I Ever- I love everything that Mindy Kaling does, but this is one of my favorites!  I just finished watching the series and I laughed and cried the entire time!  It is a coming of age series about an Indian-American high school age girl trying to navigate high school after the death of her father.  It’s so relatable, funny and heartwarming. The series is narrated by John McEnroe and Andy Samberg- definitely very entertaining! The previews do not do this show justice…you have to watch for yourself!

Next in Fashion is a perfect binge for Project Runway fans…it’s Netflix’s take on the tried-and-tested fashion competition format. Eighteen designers draw, cut and sew for the chance to win a cash prize and the opportunity to sell their line on Net-a-Porter, designing looks from red carpet dresses to sportswear under unrealistic time conditions. Hosted by Alexa Chung and Tan France of Queer Eye, the mood is light, and the draw is the talent of the designers most of whom are already very accomplished and manage to create truly impressive catwalk showstoppers.
