WELCOMING SUMMER WITH HEALTHY HABITS
Summer is officially here and while we want to be healthy and look our best all year long, we seem to be more conscious of it when we are wearing summer dresses, shorts and bathing suits instead of winter sweaters!
I seem to have fallen into some bad eating and exercising habits lately and I have been trying to clean up my diet and get on a better workout schedule since the weather has gotten warmer. It all seems so easy when I'm on vacation and I can go for a walk or do yoga anytime I want to. Things are so much different when I'm at home and my schedule is hectic because of errands and other responsibilities! I thought I would share some pretty basic advice for getting healthier and looking good in your bathing suit!
Cut Back On Sugar! Quitting the white stuff is great advice, not only for your waistline, but for your overall health. Sugar can cause everything from cancer to cavities and has been proven to be more addictive than cocaine (I can believe that because I have a major sweet tooth). Instead of choosing processed foods full of sugar, try blueberries, strawberries and watermelon. Save the sweet treats for a once in a while indulgence.
Do Weight Bearing Exercise! Yoga can be a great workout because it is a body-weight-bearing exercise. With a regular yoga practice you will improve flexibility, balance, bone density, endurance, muscle mass, agility and energy level. Also, don't be afraid of five to eight pound weights when working out at a gym or with weights at home. When you resistance train, you are creating a more sculpted physique and building lean muscle while boosting your metabolism. By doing yoga and weight training, you will increase your calorie burn throughout the day.
Add Some Good Quality Protein! A high protein diet is important for building lean muscle mass and getting rid of unwanted fat. Consume protein dense foods throughout the day by eating lentils, plain greek yogurt with fresh fruit, dark leafy greens and fish. This will keep your energy levels and your metabolism high.
