Wearing A Vintage Fur Coat

As I write this post, I’m sitting in bed in my hotel room at The St. Regis Hotel! It has become a tradition to bring my daughters to New York for their Christmas present every year and something we all look forward to all year long! Last year, our hotel wasn’t great so I decided early in November to try to find a boutique hotel that would be better without breaking the bank. After doing some research, I decided on The Lexington Hotel in Midtown. It’s really sad that hotels misrepresent themselves in such a big way….but maybe I should have read a few more reviews, because The Lexington, in my opinion, was anything but nice! The TINY rooms hadn’t been updated in years, the service was horrible, the security lock on the door was coming out of the wall, there was no water in the room and the bathroom wasn’t clean! I was furious and let them know! After one night in an uncomfortable bed, we decided to change hotels and were able to get a room at the St. Regis. We had two rooms at The Lexington, but since we had a bit of an upgrade at the St. Regis, we all were in one room with a king bed and a cot (a very nice cot). This hotel is beyond nice, the service is amazing (we have a butler), and everything was perfect although, we are all over packers, so the room was a little crowded! We still had an amazing time and hardly spent any time in the room anyway. It’s so nice to feel a little pampered!

The girls left yesterday and Baldy joined me later in the afternoon. We’re still here at the St. Regis for one more night and the room is definitely less crowded! There is nothing quite like New York City at Christmas…it’s just so magical! The forecast is calling for rain today so we’ve decided to go to the Met and spend the afternoon! I’m sure it will be amazing and dry!

When I started packing for this trip, I knew I wanted to pack a few outfits that were festive without being over-the-top red and green. I decided to pack a fur coat that belonged to my mom. It’s a beautiful coat and it fits me perfectly. It’s styled like a bomber jacket, so it’s a bit more casual that a more traditional fur coat, making it perfect with jeans. I wore the coat all day long on Saturday styled with jeans, a camel cashmere sweater with a statement pearl necklace, straight leg jeans, my favorite red bag from Tory Burch and some really sparkly Gucci boots that I’ve had for several years. I got so many compliments on my outfit and I stayed warm all day long.

I know that wearing fur is controversial these days and at this point in my life, I wouldn’t buy a new fur coat, but wearing vintage is different. As I said, this coat belonged to my mother and brings back memories every time I put it on. It’s so soft and beautiful and I feel very elegant wearing it. Vintage furs are easy to find in consignment and antique shops and there are many styles available from little shoulder capes to full length furs. I’ve bought several others over the years and love wearing them.

I’m including a boutique below with a few faux furs as well as similar pieces to the ones I’m wearing! Keep scrolling for a few things that are on my holiday wish list!

I’ve been searching the internet for ideas about other ways to style this coat and I’m excited to wear it in different ways. The obvious way to wear a fur is to really dress it up, but why not throw it on with jeans and sneakers? I’m definitely going to play around with this over the winter!

These boots are my holiday favorites!

This picture above was taken several years ago with the same coat. The picture below is a coat I purchased at a vintage store in Savannah, Georgia and it looks like real fur, but it’s a fabulous faux! This coat is so heavy that I wouldn’t even consider traveling with it, but it’s perfect for a really cold day!

Enjoy the boutique below…two of the items that I’m really loving in the boutique are the Grey Malin print taken in front of Bergdorf Goodman and the new cookbook from Ina Garten and I’m dying for the fur lined suede loafers! I saw someone walking down Madison Avenue wearing them with off white jeans and they are fabulous!

I would love to know your thoughts on wearing vintage fur…do you own it or wear it? Leave a comment and let me know!
