Essentials for a Day In the Sun

Recently I had a melanoma removed on my shoulder. I have a four inch scar that reminds me daily the importance of sunscreen. I have not always been as diligent with sunscreen as I should have been and clearly, it’s catching up with me. The melanoma was definitely a wakeup call, but I’m also dealing with crepey skin that I’m sure is worse because of my years in the sun. Today’s post is all about sunscreen…the best sunscreens to wear, why you should wear it and also, how you can naturally protect you skin from the sun!

Ten Reasons to Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen helps prevent the development of skin cancers, including melanoma, basal cell, and squamous cell carcinomas.

Regular use of sunscreen reduces wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots caused by sun damage.

Sunscreen shields the skin from painful burns that can damage skin cells.

Protects against pigmentation issues like dark spots and discoloration.

Shields skin structures responsible for firmness and elasticity, helping to maintain youthful skin.

Protects against DNA damage caused by UV rays that can lead to skin diseases. While melanin in the skin helps to block some UV rays, prolonged sun exposure can still allow enough UV rays to penetrate and damage DNA.

Provides a barrier for those prone to skin irritation or conditions like rosacea.

Contributes to healthier skin by preventing UV-induced oxidative stress.

Using sunscreen can help makeup stay in place longer and look fresh.

Regular sunscreen use promotes a proactive approach to skin health and self-care.

Foods to Naturally Protect You from the Sun

Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can bolster your skin’s natural defenses against UV damage. Foods high in vitamins C and E - such as citrus fruits, berries, nuts, and leafy greens help neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure. Incorporating tomatoes and watermelon provides lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that enhances skin resilience to UV rays. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon and flaxseeds reduce inflammation and support skin barrier function, offering additional protection. Additionally, phytonutrients in colorful vegetables and fruits, like carrots and sweet potatoes, contribute carotenoids that may provide some natural sun protection. While diet alone isn't a substitute for sunscreen, maintaining a nutrient-rich, antioxidant-filled diet can enhance your skin’s ability to defend against sun-induced damage naturally.

In addition…Cabana Life is a brand that makes clothing with SPF included so you can add extra protection while you’re in the sun!
